A significant number of expats who arrive in Lagos switch from Windows to Mac. Here is an honest account of what the transition actually involves.
What Stays the Same
More than you might expect. Email, browser, and most web applications work identically. Microsoft Office has native Mac versions — functionally identical to Windows. Your files transfer directly without conversion.
The Brief Confusion Period
The keyboard. Control on Windows becomes Command (⌘) on Mac. Takes about one week to become automatic. Closing windows does not quit applications. The red dot closes the window — the app keeps running. Use ⌘+Q to quit. Right-click. Two-finger tap on the trackpad. Enable in System Settings → Trackpad → Secondary Click. Installing software. Drag the app to Applications folder. No wizard. No Next Next Finish. Considerably saner.
What You Will Not Miss
The antivirus subscription. The Windows update restarts at 2am. Gradual performance degradation requiring occasional full reinstallation. macOS has built-in malware protection and a meaningfully more resistant security architecture.
A typical switch — Lagos, 2025
He arrived from Manchester, Windows user for thirty years, new MacBook Air. We spent an hour setting things up. Three weeks later: "I cannot believe I waited this long." This is approximately seventy percent of Windows-to-Mac switcher outcomes, in my experience.

I set up new Mac switchers regularly — keyboard preferences, file migration, email setup, application installation. About two hours. Same day, in your language.
